Description:
Very rare four page advertisement for Bayview House Lunatic Asylum, issued as a supplement to The Illustrated Sydney News September 29th 1969.
The contents of the advert consists entirely of testimonials from former patient, friends of friends, doctors and extracts from the visitors book. A rare colonial insight into the activities of a private mental health estalishment. Bay View House was situated near the Cook’s River, Tempe, operated as a private lunatic asylum, with the first patient admitted on 8 November 1865. It was formerly a private residence, which had been rearranged and enlarged by the addition of new buildings. The asylum was owned by Dr George Tucker and opened as an alternative for those who considered confinement in a Government asylum ‘repulsive to their feelings’.
