Description:
During his distinguished career Charles Russell was involved in many famous and important cases. One of the most memorable concerned a series of incriminating letters to The Times newspaper. The letters, which were alleged to have been penned by the Irish nationalist Charles Stewart Parnell, condoned the murders of Chief Secretary Lord Cavendish and his under-secretary in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. During the trial in London in 1887 Russell exposed them as forgeries. Lord Russell of Killowen died on 15 th August 1900, undisputedly one of the greatest legal figures of the nineteenth century. His progression from the simple tranquillity of South Down to the hustle and bustle of the highest courts in the land was truly remarkable.
