Description:

The VOC took over Surabaya in 1743 and the city then became a major Dutch trading centre and hosted the largest naval base in the Dutch East Indies. From the voyage account of Laplace in La Favorite to the Indes entitled Voyage Autour du Monde. Laplace was instructed to thoroughly explore the Indian Ocean and the route to the Indies via the Strait of Malacca, which runs between Sumatra and Malaysia, into the China Sea.
