Rare engraving from the official British Admiralty sanctioned edition of the accounts of Cook’s second voyage. All other later copies made of this image by other publishers were unauthorised, usually smaller and inferior in quality.
The Resolution visited Malekula (Vanuatu) from 22 to 23 July 1774.
Engraving depicts the head and shoulders of a bearded man. In this engraved view (the final state) the plate was reworked to remove a bow and arrow which had been on the first state of the plate, and a cloak was added.
‘They have perforated Ears, & likewise the Cartilege of the Nose is bored & they put either a Stick of two Spar or Alabastar-Stones, which are tied together, into the hold.

William Hodges (1744-1797)
William Hodges was born in London, the only son of Ann and Charles Hodges, a blacksmith of St. James’ Market London. They encouraged their son’s talent for drawing and placed him in William Shipley’s drawing school at Castle Court in the Strand. Joining Richard Wilson as an apprentice in 1758, he was required to assist his master ‘in dead colouring and the forwarding of pictures’. A short period of study under Wilson and Cipriani at the Duke of Richmond’s Gallery developed his style for classical composition. He was appointed artist on the Resolution and left Plymouth on 13 July, returning on 29 July 1775.
