Description:

Map showing the tracks of Captain John Mark Currie and Major Ovens who left on 22 May 1823, to explore the then unknown country south of Lake George. On the 28 May they reached the lake with Currie noting in his diary that this point was the known southerly limits of settlement. On the 31st they had named Isabella Plains in the southern suburb of present day Canberra and by the 6 June they had reached the Monaro Plains, the map notes &#8216called by the Natives Monaroo&#8217 but the explorers named the area Brisbane Downs after Governor Brisbane&#8217s daughter.
