Description:

Impressive large scale map of the area from Tuggerah to Narrabeen and inland to Windsor. The map contains an amazing amount of detailed and useful information designed for the ‘tourist’. At top left is a key with information for accommodation and available amenities to forty two listed places. Marked are roads, railway lines, reserves, rivers, creeks, trigonometrical stations with altitudes in feet, state forests, towns and post offices.

The colonial mapping of New
South Wales initially recorded the progress of explorations, opening up
new country for economic investment. These C20th ‘Tourist’ maps on the
other hand, are the first records of the social change and the new
phenomena of local tourism. The map clearly illustrates the increasing use of motor vehicles for
holidaying around the state.

A decorative title states; ‘Including Portion of Artesian Water Bearing Basin New South Wales Australia’.
Below the title there is another decorative panel ‘Notes’  with an
extensive key noting the type of roads, accommodation, railways,
aerodromes, camping grounds, water crossings too deep for motor car,
Trout streams etc. The map includes locations of “Streams
stocked with Trout & Bass”.

This
is one of four Tourist maps that the Department of Lands produced as
shown by the inset below the ‘Notes’ listing the four maps;

1. North Eastern
2. South Eastern
3. Central Southern
4. Central Northern

These maps are all rare due to their ephemeral nature.
