Detailed map of Perak in northern Malaysia showing the Perak River and mountain ranges after a survey by Dominic Daniel Daly.
The British had considered Perak to be of significance since 1818, mainly due to its large deposits of tin. Animosities between the local Chinese and Malay populations made the tin trade insecure, leading the British to establish a resident in Perak, which was formalised by the Pangkor Treaty of 1874. This map was printed shortly after the Perak War of 1876, during which the British attempted to suppress local resistance.
Daly, the nephew of Sir Dominick Daly, Governor of South Australia, emigrated from Scotland to South Australia where he was the surveyor on the Northern Territory Survey Expedition in 1868-70 before moving to Singapore and being appointed Superintendent of Public Works and Surveys in Selangor and completed numerous accurate surveys of the British states in the Malay Peninsula, adding significantly to the existing knowledge of the region. He later worked in British North Borneo, giving him the honour of having been, as an article in the Sydney Morning Herald wrote, ‘a pioneer of the British Empire in three separate colonies’.
