Description:
Von Euler’s rare map of North America printed on four separate sheets , each numbered in Roman numerals and with a decorative title cartouches and Euler’s cum privilegio stamp.
Sheet I / Pars I. Extends from the Mississippi River valley through the American Southwest and presents a detailed view of French Louisiana and Spanish possessions in New Mexico, with a Great Space of Land Unknown and Tecas in between. A notation on a river flowing into Lake of the Woods (The Wood Lake), “Great River coming from the West discovered lately by the Oshages Savages.” A large inset map at top left of Hudson and Baffin Bays with numerous English notes of discoveries in the region.
Sheet II / Pars II. Covers the British and French possessions from Georgia to Newfoundland and Labrador. The Appalachian Mountains weave in an interesting formation through the Mid-Atlantic and South. Numerous Indian tribes are noted throughout, and the fishing banks along the coast of Canada are well depicted.
Sheet III / Pars III. Covers the region from the Gulf Coast of the U.S. through Mexico to Honduras, and presents a detailed view of the Spanish possessions in New Mexico with the note Country Not Particularly Known in Texas.
Sheet IV / Pars IV. Depicts the Caribbean and Central America with good detail of place names, islands, shoals and reefs. The map extends north to Cumberland Island, Georgia and west to Pensacola, Florida. Florida is quite narrow with southern Florida depicted as a series of large islands. A number of rivers and small lakes fill the peninsula. In contrast, there is little inland detail in South America, where Lake Maracaibo is given an elongated, narrow shape.
From, Euler’s, Atlas geographicus omnes orbis terrarum regiones…Â
Leonhard Euler (1707 - 1783)
Leonhard Euler (1707–1783) Euler was one of greatest mathematicians of the period of Enlightenment. Born in Switzerland but worked most of his life in Russia and Germany. He made important discoveries in fields as diverse as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory. He also introduced much of the modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for mathematical analysis, such as the notion of a mathematical function. He is also renowned for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, astronomy, and music theory. Euler's involvement with cartography began by his tuition by the great French cartographer Delisle who had been invited to work at the Petersburg Academy Observatory. Delisle taught Euler astronomy and observational techniques with telescopes and other instruments. In September 1734 Delisle suggested that Euler work with a three foot quadrant prior to working independently making observations the following month. The results of Euler's research and observation into determining longitude, led later to the formation of the geography department of the academy.
