Description:

C18th miniature double hemisphere world map from an Italian edition of Buffier’s Geografia universale.

In this edition of this map California is now a peninsula and Australia is shown with the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his two voyages in 1642-44. This depiction of the Australian continent was to remain unchanged until the discovery of the east coast by James Cook in 1769-70.

Mapmaker:

Claude Buffier (1661-1737)

French philosopher, historian and teacher, born in Poland of French parents, who returned to France and settled at Rouen soon after his birth. He was educated at the Jesuit college there, and he was received into the Order at the age of nineteen. A dispute with the archbishop compelled him to leave Rouen. After a short stay in Rome, he returned to Paris to the college of the Jesuits, where he spent the rest of his life.
