Description:
Superb double hemisphere world map embellished by a pair of figures of Atlas (or Hercules) figures supporting the spheres and holding a dedication banner. An ornate Rococo styled engraved frame surrounds the map.
Australia is shown according to the discoveries made by Abel Tasman 1642-44. Australia’s east coast is shown with an imaginary line connecting Van Diemen’s Land to the Solomon Islands a theory promoted by the French School of Theoretic Cartography.
From Desnos, Atlas General, Civil, Ecclesiatique et Militaire…., Paris.
Mapmaker:
Louis Brion De La Tour (fl 1756-1803)
Beyond the fact that Brion was an engineer by profession and held the post of Ingenieur-Geographe du Roi, little is known of his career. He published a wide range of statistical works and a number of atlases, published by the well known French mapmaker Louis Charles Desnos (1725-1805).
