Description:

Very decorative c.18th French double hemisphere world map surrounded with a Rocco frame, putti and cartographic tools by Louis Brion De La Tour (fl 1756-1803).

On either side are panels of text. Australia is shown joined to New Guinea and the New Hebrides as original mapped by Nicholas Bellin in 1753. This representation of the Australian landmass significantly influenced the way the continent was depicted and used in almost all maps produced prior to the publication of James Cook’s discoveries of the east coast in 1773.

Louis Brion De La Tour (1756 - 1803)

Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1803) was a French cartographer and geographer active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and produced a number of important maps and atlases, many of which were used in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He is considered one of the most important French cartographers of his time.
