Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique, ou Description Generale du Globe Terrestre et Aquatique en Deux-Plans-Hemispheres. - Antique Map from 1706

Genuine antique

1706

Description:

Elegant double-hemisphere world map with a dedication to the Sun King, Louis XIV, by Hubert Jaillot, featuring two decorative cartouches at the top and bottom. Centre left is the figure of Pheme, the goddess of fame and on the right is Nike the Goddess of strength, speed and victory, both holding the French Royal Arms of France Moderne . The lower cartouche features Jaillot&#8217s royal privilege and is bordered on the right by the figure of Triton, a fish-tailed sea god who was the son of Poseidon, king of the seas. Triton stilled the waves with the blow of a conch-shell while to the left is the goddess Aphrodite Derceto represented as a mermaid holding a fish as a symbol of the fertility and life of water. The map was engraved by Louis Cordier with the geographical information provided by Nicholas Sanson, Geographer to the King, and widely considered to be the father of French cartography. Jaillot played an important role in continuing Sanson&#8217s legacy. Following Sanson&#8217s death in 1667, the business was inherited by his sons Adrien and Guillaume who partnered with Jaillot and his contemporary Pierre Duval to publish Sanson&#8217s maps. The first such publication was Jaillot&#8217s Atlas Nouveau of 1692. The map shows Australia according to Tasman&#8217s first and second voyages 1642-44 and includes the earlier Dutch discoveries made by Houtman 1619, van Leeuwin 1622, Nuyts 1627 and de Wit 1628. The Trial Islands 1622 are also included but incorrectly placed. California is shown as an island. The first state of this map was published in Jaillot&#8217s Atlas Francois of 1695. In the early states, the last digit of the date was not engraved and was intended to be entered in manuscript. The geography of the map shows no distinct changes from Jaillot&#8217s world map of 1674 but the decorative cartouches between the hemispheres are very different. This is a later state of this map, issued in 1706 and dated as such on the engraving plate. The later editions are also known for the inclusion of the words &#8216Geographe de sa Majest&#8217 which appears beneath Jaillot&#8217s inscription in the dedication. Pierre Duval (1618 - 1683)

Pierre Duval was born in Abbeville, Duval began his cartographic career in Paris studying under his uncle, the celebrated geographer Nicolas Sanson. He was soon employed in editing maps for publication by the print-seller Pierre Mariette. By 1650, he had become Geographe du roi. According to royal letters found among his papers in 1683, Duval was employed as an officer in the Maison du Roi and received a modest wage of 350 livres. He sustained a publishing collaboration with Mariette until 1654, when he married Marie Desmaretz, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Following this, he established himself in Paris and produced maps and cartographic documents for a variety of Parisian map-sellers. Duval supplied manuscripts to Nicolas Berey, Girard Joillan, Nicolas Langlois, Estienne Vouillement and Antoine de Fer.
