Description:

Double hemisphere world map with a climate grid and with Australia and New Zealand shown according to the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his tow voyages in 1642-4 and with an imaginary east coast extending from Van Diemen’s Land to New Guinea. This depiction of the Australian continent was promoted by the French School of Theoretcial Geography of which Nicholas Bellin was involved and who was held in high regard.

From Pailaret’s Atlas Methodique compose pour l’usage de Son Altesse Serenissime Monseigneur le Prince d’Orange et de Nassau, Stadhouder des Septs Provinces-Unies..

Jean Palairet (1697 - 1774)

Palairet was a French cartographer born in Montauban who emigrated to England. He worked as an agent in London for the French States General, and taught French to the children of George II. While working as London agent for Jacob Boreel, Palairet apparently played a part in introducing the game of cricket to the Netherlands: in 1765 he sent four balls and 12 bats to the Netherlands, and attempted to find a copy of a rule-book for the game.
