Description:

Map of the world on Mercator’s Projection with the tracks of Captain’s Cook second and third voyages marked and those of Bougainville. Australia is shown with Bass Strait, named Detroit de Basse, the name used on  Aaron Arrowsmith’s first issue of his chart of the strait which he changed to Bass in the second edition.

Edme Mentelle Mentelle (1730 - 1816)

Mentelle was a French geographer born in Paris in 1730. He studied under Jean-Baptiste Louis Crevier at the College of Beauvais before becoming professor of Geology and History at the Ecole Militaire. He was a founding member Institut National des Sciences et des Arts in 179. Some of Mentelle's published works are; Geographie Comparee1778, Atlas Universel1779 and Cours Complet de Cosmographie, de Chronologie, de Geographie et d'Histoire1801.
