Description:

Large c.18th French double hemisphere world map with a sumptuous title cartouche comprising cherubs and angels either side of a classical pediment.

Double hemisphere c.18th French world map showing the tracks of Cook’s three voyages as well numerous other navigators. First issued in 1752 this edition was published soon after Cook’s final voyage which resulted in the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands and proved that the long sought north west passage did not exist. Australia is shown with the discovery of the east coast by Cook but prior to Bass and Flinders discovery of Bass Strait and the charting of the southern coast by the Baudin expedition.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688 - 1766)

Vaugondy inherited the firm of his uncle, Pierre Moullart-Sanson, in 1730. He quickly increased the business when he purchased the stock one of the leading French cartographers, Hubert Jaillot. He astutely combined his own additions to the maps he had purchased, bringing them up to date without the expense of creating new maps and engraving plates. Fittingly as a leading Parisian mapmaker of his day he was made Geographer to the King in 1730. Vaugondy was also one of the leading exponents of the French School of Theoretical Cartography and like Nicholas Bellin popularised the notion of an imaginary east coast of Australia.
