Description:
Recognised as one of the most important early maps depicting the coastline of Australia. ‘Mar id India’ was published in 1650 by Joannes Janssonius of Amsterdam as one of the maps from his famous world atlas ‘Het vijfde Deel des Grooten Atlas’. Although published after the two Tasman voyages of 1642 and 1644 the results of these voyages are not shown. However an emerging and accurate outline of the western and south-western coast of the continent is clearly visible with legends noting the various Dutch voyages responsible for each particular part of the coastline. A fine example of Dutch cartography. Tooley 747 Clancy Pg 82 Perry Pg 25 Schilder 45 pg 333
