Description:

Hermannsburg school”, the Hermannsburg mission was set up in 1877 to provide religious instruction to the Arrente tribe. In 1934 artist, Rex Battarbee, exhibited a number of  watercolours he painted of the surrounding McDonnell Ranges area. More than 300 Arrernte people viewed this exhibition. On his return to the mission 2 years later, Rex gave Albert Namatjira painting lessons and he soon became the leading exponent of the Hermannsburg School and teacher to many Arrente artists.

Nelson Pannka (1935 - 1971)

Hermannsburg school painter born 1st of July 1935, son of Anthapa and Sandra Pannaka, Luritja people from the Western Desert Language group, skin Kemarre from north east Arrente. He died on 22nd December, 1971.
