Description:
Phillip-Stephan was one of the first to use the technique of photo lithography in Australia for topographical views.
“The Phillip-Stephan Company in Sydney had tried to market large colour photolithographs in 1887 using a selection of some of Caire, Lindt and Bayliss’ best work, even if uncredited. The size and colouring suggested that the individual prints could be framed for the wall as decorative items(20). Views photographs had been framed too, but were usually stuck in albums and seen as expository about the subject matter, rather than as fine interior decoration.” Gael Newtown, ‘Shades of Light’.

Adam Stephan ( - )
Stephan was a lithographer and Samuel Phillip, photographer, began working on their process of photo lithography in 1884, and by late 1887 had formed a company in Sydney. A Melbourne company was established in June 1889 and a Brisbane branch was also contemplated in that year.
