Description:

Early C19th engraving of the bare knuckle boxer, Tom Molineaux (23 March 1784 – 4 August 1818) who was known as “The Moor“. Molineaux was an African American slave born in Virginia. After gaining notability and considerable earnings fighting fellow slaves, he was granted freedom and departed for England to embark on a career as a professional boxer.
His infamous fight against Tom Cribb for the English title ended in defeat in 1811 in front of a crowd of 15,000 spectators. A mere three years later he succumbed to a dismal demise as an impoverished alcoholic and later dying of liver failure at the age of 34.
