Description:
Early c.19th map of New South Wales and Van Dieman’s Land, with insets of Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. Also shows part of New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. The area marked ‘unexplored’ at the southern end of the map was soon to be explored by Thomas Mitchell on his third expedition in 1836 where he found rich grazing land and named the region ‘Australia Felix’.
The inset of Lord Howe Island is based on the map in the First Fleet account by Governor Arthur Phillip in 1789, the one of Norfolk was based on the map published in Hunter’s Journal issued in 1793. The inset map of Van Diemen’s Land is based on Scott’s map issued in 1824.
