Frederick Woodhouse was the pre-eminent sporting artist of his time, he became best known for painting every Melbourne Cup winner for more than thirty years, from the first in 1861.

Woodhouse was a late colonial period Melbourne painter, illustrator, printmaker and sculptor, is buried in Geelong Cemetery, Victoria.
