Description:

A superb and scarce wall chart of Switzerland with decorative title comprising a mountainous landscape with a shepherd blowing an alpenhorn used in the Alps to call cows to pasture. On the right is an extensive list of Observations set within another decorative cartouche. Further information is contained on the lower left and right of the map, these include a list of glaciers and heights of mountains. The engraved image at the bottom centre is of la Valle Chamouny taken in 1742. William Faden was one of the leading English mapmakers of his day and all of his maps contained up to date and current information.

William Faden (1750 - 1836)

Faden was a cartographer and publisher who took over Thomas Jefferys's business in 1771 and held the position of Geographer to His Majesty the King and the Prince of Wales. Faden's work was of the highest standard and he was chosen to produce the very first map for the Ordnance Survey - a map of Kent in four sheets - in 1801.
