Description:

World map on Mercator&#8217s projection by Matthaus Merian, a Swiss publisher and engraver working in Germany who is renowned for his town views. Includes two circular insets of the north and south poles. The map was based on Blaeu&#8217s world map originally published in his atlas of 1630, which appears in this catalogue. The mythical land of Terra Australis Incognito, a great landmass believed to exist in order to balance the earth, is shown extending along the entire lower part of the map. The northwest part of Australia, named Beach and Noua Guinea, are both shown connected to this large landmass. The naming of Beach can be traced back to Fine&#8217s 1532 world map which was based on information from Marco Polo&#8217s incorrectly scribed accounts. The seas are decorated with ships, compass roses and galleons. The text of this map is engraved in both Latin and German, with German text being in a Gothic script. The note referring to the discovery of America which appeared in Blaeu&#8217s world map has been translated into German and is prominently engraved on the American continent. From Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica.
