Description:

Rare c.19th map of South Australia with a table of historical information at top right by Philippe Vandermaelen.

Vandermaelen’s, Atlas universel , was notable for several reasons. It comprised of roughly 380 conically projected map sheets and 40 pages of statistical tables divided into six volumes. This atlas was the pioneer to be produced using the innovative lithography printing process. It was also the first atlas to exhibit the entire world in maps with a large uniform scale of about 42 kilometers to 25 millimeters. Additionally, the maps were created to fit together to form a three-dimensional terrestrial globe with an approximate diameter of 7.75 meters.

From Vander Maelen, Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique, Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique, sur l’echelle
