"The illustrated works of Rabelais are being offered here at 15 centimes apiece. To tempt the reader, Cheret supplies a lusty figure, with a sword strapped over his generous stomach, marching down the road in the company of a fulsome woman. A friar by the side of the road looks on with amusement at their hedonism. Small text on the lower left tells us ‘It’s better to write about laughter than tears’ and admonishes us to live happily. Sagot, in his 1891 catalogue, sold most of Cheret’s posters for three to five francs each this image, however, had a selling price of 20 francs. It was rare even then, and Sagot declared it to be ‘a superb poster, one of (Cheret’s) most beautiful"(Rennert, PAI-XXIV, 240
