Wonderful late Victorian engraving by William Hatherell of a crowded road with numerous cyclists.

Hatherell had been sent to Australian in the 1880’s to work on numerous images for Cassells, Picturesque Australia which was made to capitalise on the upcoming celebrations of 150 years of Australian colonial settlement.

William Hatherell (1855 - 1928)

Painter born in London and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell's, who sent him to Australia as one of the main artists for Picturesque Australia, as well as The Graphic and other American magazines.
