Description:
Famous double hemisphere world map, by Petrus Plancius one of the most important of all Dutch mapmakers active during the Golden Age
of map-making. Superbly decorated with a fret work design surrounding
the two hemispheres, an armorial sphere at top and an elaborate compass
rose at bottom.
The map is based on the double hemispherical 1587 world map by Rumold Mercator. It incorporates the improvements found on the post-1587 world map of Ortelius including a reshaped South America and the insertion of the Solomon Isles. Plancius has introduced yet further changes of his own, based on the latest Portuguese information regarding the far west coast of America and the west coast of Asia. Japan is shown for the first time as one small and three larger islands.
Most of the maps prepared by Plancius are rare, as they were not printed in standard atlases.
This second state is identified by the addition of word Magallanica which is printed across the southern continent in each hemisphere.

Petrus Plancius (1552 - 1622)
Plancius was a Flemish minister of the Reformed Church, an astronomer and cartographer. He studied theology in Germany and England. He fled Brussels for Amsterdam because of fear of religious prosecution by the Inquisition after the city fell into Spanish hands in 1585. There he became interested in navigation and cartography and, he was one of the first to appreciate the significance of earlier Portuguese charts and became the expert on the charting of the sea routes to the Indies. He was an advocate of a North East passage. In 1602 he was appointed official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company.
