Rare engraving from the official British Admiralty sanctioned edition of the accounts of Cook’s second voyage. All other later copies made of this image by other publishers were unauthorised, usually smaller and inferior in quality.
Cook discovered the island group of New Caledonia on 4 September 1774, which he named New Caledonia. The Resolution remained in New Caledonia from 5 to 13 September, 1774.
1. A lance
2. The ornamental part, on a larger scale.
3. A cap ornamented with feathers, and girt with a fligg.
4. A comb.
5. A becket, or piece of cord made of cocoa-nut bark, used in throwing their lances.
6. and 7. Different clubs.
8. A pick-axe used in cultivating the ground.
9. Adze.
