Description:

Very rare comical AFL lithograph.

From the original edition of the Australasian Sketcher.

Titles of insets from top left to right;

The start “So jolly cold”
The arrival, with such an appetite for breakfast
Wallaby flat ground a clear field and no favour

As we entered the field
An incident not in the programme sic
Wanted on the voyage
Podger kicks our first goal
Little spec takes an unintentional header into the creek

The game was stopped a little while because
Mid riot revelry in all out pursuit of football play
Nuble kicks our last goal
The way we left the field
Home little specs obliges with “Home they brought their warriors dead”.

In this plate, dealing with a subject of considerable interest at this time of the year, our artist has depicted the holiday trip of a gallant metropolitan club to teach football to the members of the flourishing club which plays that game in the thriving township of Wallaby-flat. How they came, saw, and were seen, fought strenuously, and if they did not command success deserved it, and retired, if not victorious, at any rate glorious, from the scene of conflict, all this is shown in picturesque form by the pencil of our artist, who has been specially successful in seizing the graphic and humorous aspects of the trip and of the contest.”
