Fine etching by the maritime historian and artist Geoffrey Ingleton of H.M. Cutter Mermaid, which on 16 October 1817 under the command of Lieutenant Phillip Parker King, RN was sent to ‘Explore and Survey the Coast of Australia’. Famously the Mermaid was careened for repairs at, ‘Careening Bay’ where the hull was patched up for 3 weeks until 9 October. During this time King carved ‘HMC Mermaid 1820’ on the single Boab tree at the end of the bay.
Geoffrey Chapman Ingleton (1908 - 1998)
Ingleton was a maritime historian and eminent hydrographer who in his early life was an officer in the Royal Australian Navy. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. Ingleton's diverse interests were always centred on things maritime. He was a cartographer, author, artist, etcher, ship modeller, book collector and publisher. He acquired an enormous collection of books and periodicals, maps, photographs, ships' log books and nautical charts.
