Boutet de Monvel was a painter and watercolorist from Orleans who created only a few posters. His experience in illustrated children’s literature and his modern style influenced by Japanese aesthetics combine to create a wonderful design for the famous Dr.Pierre toothpaste. “Dr. Pierre’s products enjoyed great commercial success and were made household names, aided by multiple, hard hitting advertising campaigns, both in France and abroad” (Health p.179)

Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1850-1913)
Monvel was a French painter and illustrator best known for his watercolours for children’s books. He was an academic painter who studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel, Gustave Boulanger, Jules Joseph Lefebvre, and Carolus Duran
