The first sighting of the Red-tailed black Cockatoo was made on 4th July 1770 by Sydney Parkinson at Endeavour River while the ship the Endeavour was being careened for repairs, near present day Cooktown. A specimen was taken back to England by Joseph Banks and from this, the first scientific description was made by John Latham in 1790.

Modern common name Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Banksian Cockatoo, Red-Tailed Cockatoo

Modern binomial name Calyptorhynchus banksii

Edouard Guerin (1799 – 1874)

His seriesIconographie du Règne Animal de G. Cuvier, was a complement to the work of the zoologists Georges Cuvier and Pierre André Latreille, Le Règne Animal, which illustrated only a selection of the animals covered. He also founded several journals: Magasin de zoologie, d’anatomie comparée et de paléontologie (1830),Revue zoologique par la Société cuviérienne (1838),Revue et Magasin de zoologie pure et appliquée (1849), and Revue de sériciculture(1863). Guérin-Méneville was elected President of the Société Entomologique de France for the year 1846.
