Description:
Famous c.16th map of Persia based on Gastaldi’s 1564 map of Asia Minor and Ortelius’s own map of Asia. It includes present day Iraq and Afghanistan and is identified as being the first state by the page signature on the verso of 49 which changed to 64 for the second state in 1573. On watermarked paper, the watermark are two crossed arrows.
Ortelius was the first to separate ancient and recent geographic knowledge in his maps and to indicate the changes from the old nomenclature to the new.
From: Ortelius, A. Theatrum orbis terrarum
Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598)
Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer, map seller and publisher. Ortelius was a leading cartographer who published the first modern atlas in 1570, Theatrum orbis terrarum in which each map was presented on a separate sheet. He initially trained as an engraver in 1547 and as an illuminator of maps. Influenced by Gerard Mercator he published his first map in 1564 and soon after published his famous atlas that changed the way maps were sold and published.
