Description:
The classic view of colonial Perth taken from the vantage point of Mount Eliza. The hill was named in 1827 by James Stirling, after the wife of the Governor of New South Wales Ralph Darling. In 1831 John Septimus Roe the Surveyor General had selected the land around Mount Eliza to be set aside for public purposes but by 1835 extensive logging had occurred in the area. This was overturned by 1871 and 175 hectares were set aside for public purposes.
