Description:

Adventure Bay, Bruny Island. The bay was first sighted by Abel Tasman in 1642 but because of gale force winds, he was unable to make a landing. Captain James Cook in H. M. S. &quotResolution&quot &amp Captain Tobias Furneaux in H. M. S. &quotAdventure&quot left England in 1772 also to explore the South Seas, becoming separated Furneaux followed Tasman’s chart and in 1773 found the bay naming it Adventure Bay. Captain Cook landed at Adventure Bay in 1777 from H. M. S. &quotResolution&quot with William Bligh as sailing master.

Thomas Bowen (1733 - 1790)

Mapmaker and print seller, son of Emanuel Bowen in Wales. Apprenticed to his father 1748. In partnership with Richard Reynolds in 1761 when they were prisoners in the King's Bench, required to make a schedule of their estate and effects as insolvent debtors. He produced numerous maps and atlases. He died in 1790 in reduced circumstances.
