John Halliday (?-1912)

John Halliday was Engineer to the Melbourne Harbour Trust. He was born at Belfast, and obtained his practical training with Lawson and Sons, of Leeds.  In 1873 he went out to New Zealand, where he carried out important railway, water-supply, drainage and other works. Proceeding in 1884 to Victoria, he undertook, amongst other work, the construction of the Victoria Dock for the Melbourne Harbour Trust, and was subsequently appointed Chief Engineer to that body, a position which he retained until his death.  Mr. Halliday was elected an Associate Member of The Institution on the 2nd March, 1886, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 6th February, 1906.
