HONDIUS’S EARLY MAP SHOWING PETER NUYTS DISCOVERIES ON WEST COAST
When first published, this was one of the earliest maps to show the discoveries made by Peter Nuyts, Councillor of the Indies, and Captain Francois Thijssen in the Gulden Zeepaert, who charted 1800km of the Western Australian coast between Cape Leeuwin and Nuyts Archipelago. It was also one of the earliest maps to show any part of the South Australian coast, with the discovery and naming of two islands off Ceduna, St Francis and St Pieter. The other discoveries shown are those of Hartog 1616.
Also shown are the Trial Islands. The sources for this map are Hessel Gerritsz’s Chart of the Malay Archipelago and the Dutch Discoveries in Australia and although dated 1618 must have been issued after Nuyts’s return to Batavia on 10 April 1627 but before the completion of Gerritsz’s term as VOC cartographer in 1632. Three copies of Gerritsz’s map are recorded. This is the third state.
The map is superbly engraved and decorated in each corner with scenes of native life, two scrolled panels, one containing the title and the other left blank.

Henricus Hondius II (1597 - 1651)
Henricus was a Dutch cartographer, engraver and publisher, born in Amsterdam, the second son of the famous cartographer Jodocus Hondius I, who had started a map-making business in the city. Henricus obtained the original plates of the Mercator 1569 world map, and published a 1606 version of it. After his father death in 1612 Henricus ran the business with his brother-in-law. In 1621 he opened his own company in his hometown. The first time his name was mentioned in an atlas was in 1623 when he published the fifth edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. After 1628 Henricus partnered with the cartographer Jan Janssonius and together they continued the business. He died in Amsterdam.
