Description:

A view of the mouth of the Singapore River looking upstream, on the left is South Boat Quay. European merchants displaced from the north bank used warehouses on the originally marshy south bank after it was reclaimed in 1822. The quay was faced with masonry and provided with a double row of steps for access at high and low tide. From the voyage account of Captain Cyrille Laplace in La Favorite to the Indes entitled Voyage Autour du Monde. Laplace was instructed to thoroughly explore the Indian Ocean and the route to the Indies via the Strait of Malacca, which runs between Sumatra and Malaysia, into the China Sea.
