Wonderful image of gold diggers at work. Rare.
This series of views were the first examples of the new printing technique of photo lithography. In this method the plate was photo sensitised and the image was then transferred by photography. The plate then was inked and printed in the traditional way. Rare.

Biography:

Samuel Phillips, photographer, and Adam Stephan, lithographer, began working on their process in 1884, and in late 1887 formed the company. A Melbourne company was established in June 1889 and a Brisbane branch was also contemplated in that year. The building it occupied by the Melbourne company was destroyed by fire in January 1890.
