Description:

Art Nouveau botanical lithograph from the important series by Anton Seder, Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe (The plant in arts and crafts), Vienna. This series was highly influential to artists and craftsmen working in Vienna during the Art Nouveau period. 

Biography:

Anton Seder (1815-1916)

Seder was an art professor and director of the School of Applied Arts in Strasbourg. At the age of 19, the son of a master craftsman enrolled in the matriculation of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Before his appointment as director at the Municipal School of Applied Arts Strasbourg, the 40-year-old Seder had made a name for himself as a painter and craftsman.

In 1890, Seder was finally appointed director of the School of Arts and Crafts in Strasbourg. He was a specialist in craft drawings and published a number of beautiful designs for gold, silver and iron works.  In his role as a professor, Seder was also passionately committed to contemporary discussions in art.
