Rare photograph by J.W.Lindt, one of the most important pioneering Australian colonial photographers.
Lindt operated his studio at Prince Street, Grafton from 1870-1872. It was here that Lindt made his experimental studio portraits of Aborigines that he is best known for. This photograph was previously owned by T.Page the stationer whose premises is depicted in the image. This photograph is inscribed and dated 1872 on the verso. Whether this was a gift from Lindt or a commission from Page, we have not been able to establish. Photograph 3 – Business name on building The Beehive – Drapery, Potts Stores? Thomas Page. The photograph was previously owned by T.N.Page and is inscribed as such on the lower right in biro. The date 1872 has also been written on the card in biro by the same hand.
John William Lindt (1845 - 1926)
Lindt was a photographer, born at Frankfurt on Main, Germany, son of Peter Joseph Lindt, excise officer, and his wife Justine, née Rambach. At 17 he ran away to sea and joined a Dutch sailing ship. He deserted at Brisbane; by 1863 he was at Grafton as a piano-tuner and then worked in a photographic studio. He visited Germany in 1867 and on his return bought the business. Using the wet-plate process he photographed the Clarence River district and its Aboriginals, producing albums in 1875 and 1876.
