A & C. Black

The  publishing company A&C Black was founded in 1807 by brothers Adam and Charles Black. Originally established in Edinburgh in 1889 then subsequently moved to Soho Square in London. They published a variety of significant works. Their atlases included Black’s Atlas of North America 1854, Atlas of Australia Including the Goldfields’ (1853), leading onto the most complete collection of finely engraved country and region maps in Black’s General Atlas of the World, first published in 1879.

Sidney Hall (1788? – 1831)

A London engraver from 1817 to 1860 who worked at first from 18 Strand, and moved to Bury street Bloomsbury in 1819. He engraved general atlases and separate maps for various authors and publishers. Upon his early death – he was only in his 40’s – Hall’s business was inherited and continued by his wife, Selina Hall.
