Turpin has been hailed along side Redoute as possibly the finest French natural botanical artist of his period. He was the son of a poor and humble artisan and he learned the elements of drawing at the art school at Vire before enlisting in the battalion du Calvados at the age of fourteen. Illustrated for Alexander Humboldt, other French publications including J.J.H.Labillardi�re�s Novae Hollandiae Plantarum Specimen (1804-1806) and F.G.Levrault�s Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles (1816-1829).
