Lithograph of the Orient, built by John Elder & Co, Glasgow in 1879 (5,386 tons). It was operated by the Orient Steam Navigation Co. (Orient Line) on the UK-Australia route. In November 1879 Orient’s maiden voyage was between London and Melbourne via the Suez Canal. During the Boer War, Orient was used as the troopship HMS Orient (numbered on bow ’24’). Her last voyage took place in 1909.
