Superb early c.18th map showing a number of the early Dutch discoveries on the Australian coastline. Australia shown with discoveries made up to and including Abel Tasman’s two voyages of exploration in 1742-4.
The source of the information for the map was based on the accounts of D. Nuno da Cunha governor of the Portuguese possessions in India from 1528 to 1538. Cunha’s accounts were published by the Portuguese historian João de Barros (1496–1570), in his history of the Portuguese in their overseas territories, Asia de Ioam de Barros, dos fectos que os Portuguezes fizeram no descobrimento e conquista dos mares e terras do Oriente.

Pierre Vander Aa (1659 - 1733)
Apprenticed at the age of 9, Vander AA began his career at Lieden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. His publications include; Naaukeurige versamling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen 1706, Atlas Nouveau 1710, and Galerie Agreable du Mond.
