Description:
The Hachiman Shrine at Kotohikiyama (Zither Strumming Hill) gets its name from the Shinto god Hachiman of Usa, who reportedly appeared here in 703 to the sound of koto (zither) music. The hilltop shrine buildings overlook a beach famous for its many weather pines, seen here. On the deck a woman plays a Koto, attracting the attention of a man near the shrine gate (tori). Inset Shiranui prepares to kill Butoda, who betrayed her husband Minamoto no Tametomo. From the series Setsugekka. ‘Snow, Moon, Flowers’
