The play is set in Kurume Domain in Kyshu’s Chikugo Province, the eighth Lord of the 21 mangoku Kurume Domain is Matsudaira Dewa no Kami. Sekiya, one of the ladies in waiting at the Lord’s Palace, has a maid called Otaki. After learning that his beloved sister Otaki had been sold into prostitution, the young clam seller Yokichi travels to the Arimaya brothel to learn more about her fate. Otaki no kata had been the favoured lady in waiting of the lord of Arima, but she had committed suicide because of mistreatment by her colleagues. Otaki’s cat who she had saved when a kitten, from an attacking dog, returns after her death as Asuka the monster cat to avenge her.
