Description:
Takiyasha, the third daughter of the rebel Taira no Masakado (died 940) is shown in the snow holding a sword in one hand, a bell in the other and a torch in her mouth. She is preparing to destroy Oya no Taro Mitsukuni, who had been sent to inspect the ruins of Masakado’s fortress following its destruction in the Tengyo revolt after Masakado had declared himself emperor of northern Japan. This story was popularised in 1863 by the kabuki play titled, ‘Masakado’. Inset: Masakado standing before the giant toad which is summoned up by Takiyashi in her battle with Mitsukuni).
