Description:

From the Noh play titled, ‘Nue’ (monster) in which Minamoto no Yorimasa (1106-1180) shown kneeling in a green kimono, is about to receive his reward for having killed the monster which had terrorised the Emperor. Minmoto’s reward was a sword and Lady Shobu for a wife. A thrush is shown flying across the moon, referring to the legend of the naming of the monster, as its crying sounded similar to that of the White Thrush. In the last scene of the Noh drama the monster Nue, that had been killed by the hero, Minamoto no Yorimasa, sets off to sink into the darkness of the Yodo River, implores the moon at the edge of the mountains to illuminate the darkness in which it stays. Inset Shows the Nue on a branch. A legend says that it was called Nue because its crying voice sounds similar to that of the White&#8217s Thrush. From the series Setsugekka. ‘Snow, Moon, Flowers’
