Description:

Lady Tsukiyama (1542-1579) the adopted daughter of Imagawa Yoshimoto (1519-1560), military governor of Sanshu, Mikawa Province, was married in 1557 for political alliance reasons to Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616), who was born at Okazaki Castle but was now in custody of Yoshimoto. In the wars for control for central Japan, Lady Tsukiyama was thought to have plotted with warriors of the Takeda clan against her husband, and was accused of espionage, arrested and eventually executed by Ieyasu. The scene shows Lady Tsukiyama struggling with an attendant who tries to drag her back into Okazaki Castle. Inset: Ieyasu riding beside the hollyhock (aoi) banner of the Tokugawa clan. From the series Setsugekka. ‘Snow, Moon, Flowers’.
